Bayless Elementary School

Elementary Students Show Gains in Reading Skills

by Bettie Downs

January 28, 2010

The second AIMSweb assessment was administered the week of January 4th.  Reading scores for second grade indicate an average of 20 additional words read correctly in a passage from fall to spring. This doesn’t mean each child learned 20 additional words, it illustrates when reading a timed passage the average number of words students read and comprehend has increased an average of 20 words. This is a reflection of improved sight word vocabularies, decoding skills, and comprehension skills taught in guided reading groups. Explicit phonics instruction, word wall activities, and comprehension strategies taught are also credited.  AIMSweb does not provide for a fall first grade reading assessment. The third assessment will yield comparative data for this grade level.  In addition, the “Growth Table Compared to AIMSweb Growth Aggragate” indicates the rate of learning in first and second grade at Bayless Elementary is above the national average rate of learning.
