A reading intervention program at Bayless Junior High School, known as READ 180, is proving to be a success in assisting students in reading at their appropriate grade levels.
Mrs. Maria Elmore, SSD teacher and READ 180 instructor said, “Almost everyone that enters the Read 180 program achieves impressive reading gains.  Watching the confidence in the students grow reinforces the reason we are all here.”

Mr. Tucker, BJHS principal, said that the success students are experiencing in the READ 180 class is having positive effects in other classes as well.  According to Tucker, regular classroom teachers are reporting that many students are attaining higher levels of academic achievement as a result of the new skills they have acquired and the confidence they developed.

Based upon the success the Junior High is experiencing with reading intervention, Mr. Tucker is exploring intervention programs that will assist students in mathematics achievement.
Mr. Tucker said, “As the NCLB benchmarks increase with each passing year, intervention programs like READ 180 are needed more than ever.  In order to ensure
none of our students are “left behind,” we need to provide students with appropriate resources, class time and teachers
